COVINGTON, Ky. – A 9-year-old boy was shot Sunday afternoon while playing with marbles in front of his grandmother's home in Covington's City Heights housing complex.
The incident occurred around 12:15 p.m. in the 2500 block of Alden Court. Police on the scene said they believe two men were shooting at one another and the boy was caught in the crossfire.
The boy's stomach and head were grazed by bullets and he was transported to Cincinnati Children's Hospital. His condition was not immediately available but medics described his injuries as non life-threatening.
9 On Your Side reporter Mario Ramirez talked to the neighbor who helped the boy, Rebecca Julian. She said she heard about 15 gunshots before the boy ran into her arms and told her he had been shot.
Julian said she tended to the boy's injuries while waiting for medics to arrive.
"When somebody's bleeding you put pressure on it. We wrapped him in a blanket and waited for the ambulance to get here," she said.
Police Chief Spike Jones said residents of the neighborhood are cooperating with the investigation.
Investigators did not release suspect information.
No additional information is expected to be released until Monday.
