Have an idea worth spreading? TEDxCincinnati to hold auditions for its October main stage event

CINCINNATI - Do you have an idea worth spreading? For the first time, TEDxCincinnati is holding auditions for its main stage event. Dubbed "Vibrant Curiosity," the Oct. 16 program will feature speakers and performers giving what are known as TED talks.

“A TED talk is an opportunity for a speaker or a performer to present great ideas that are worth spreading,” said Pree Silva, of TEDxCincinnati. “The talks range in a variety of topics, tend to be compelling ideas or new ways of saying seeing things, or experience for that the audience might consider a different point of view.”

Although TEDxCincinnati representatives have not decided how many speakers and performers they will select for "Vibrant Curiosity," they invite anyone who is interested to take a stab at getting a spot. The 2013 Main Stage Event, "Sound Ideas, " featured ten speakers and performers.

Auditions will take place during the next TEDxCincinnati Paint The Town TED Happy Hour.

The happy hour runs from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Next Chapter in Mt. Adams. Tickets are $20. More than 200 people showed up at the last happy hour. MORE

“Just put yourself out there if you’re interested in auditioning,” Silva said. “Whether you’re auditioning or not, these happy hours are a great opportunity to network and meet outstanding people.”

To reserve an audition spot, send an email to TEDxAuditions@gmail.com

At the auditions, each speaker will be allowed up to 2.5 minutes on stage to share their idea worth spreading. The website says,  "We want to tap into the huge talent and potential from our city so take this opportunity to audition to be a speaker or performer at one of our future events."

“At the auditions what we are looking for are just great speakers and performers that are a good fit for TEDx,” Silva said. “(The theme) is much more relevant for speakers than for performers. When we look at performers the theme tends to be a little bit less rigid.”

Organizers are pretty clear about who is not a good fit for TEDxCincinnati's main stage event: "...Product-hawkers, jargon-junkies, dullards, wafflers, motivator wannabes and self-promoters."

More about TED

TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) is a non-profit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” TEDx is an off-shoot that allows local groups to stage their own versions of TED Talks.

“TED is a global organization and they have local branches that are generally called TEDx,” Silva said. “Here at TEDxCincinnati we have a variety of different events that we do. The highlight tends to be the main stage event.”

In addition to the main stage event, TEDxCincinnati hosts regular happy hours and presents "Building Intelligence," featuring videos of popular TED Talks, in the lobby of the Scripps Center in downtown Cincinnati. The next date for the lunch series is Sept. 18.
