COLERAIN TWP., Ohio -- Counselors were available Saturday afternoon at McAuley High School for students mourning the loss of one of their own after a fatal vehicle accident Friday evening in Colerain Township.
Rachel McGrath, 16, died in an accident that occurred at 7:42 p.m. in the 7500 block of Sheed Road when the driver of an eastbound Audi A6 lost control of the vehicle. The car went off the right side of the road and struck a parked Ford Titanium, according to Chief Daniel P. Meloy of the Colerain Township Police Department.
Meloy said the impact of the collision caused the Ford to roll over onto its top.
The initial investigation indicates the Audi was traveling at a "high rate of speed" at the time of the accident, according to Meloy. He also said drugs and/or alcohol are suspected to have played a role in the crash.
Witnesses told dispatchers during the 911 call they believe the teens were dragging race with another car.
McGrath, who was sitting in the front seat of the Audi was pronounced dead at the scene. Eric James Moormann, 19, who was sitting in the backseat of the vehicle, was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he later died. Moormann graduated last year from Colerain High School.
The driver of the Audi, 19-year-old Kyle Stein, a former La Salle High School student, was also transported to UCMC for treatment where he remained Sunday evening. His condition was not immediately available.
McAuley Principal Cheryl Sucher said she and everyone at the school is doing what they can to support McGrath's family.
"I talked this morning to her family and offered our deepest sympathy, our prayers and love and will keep in contact as they're making the funeral preparations," said Sucher about the efforts being made to console the family of the high school junior.
Zoe Laatsch, a senior at Colerain High School said she's having a difficult time coping with the reality of the accident.
"I can't really, I don't know how I'm going to get through it. I'm surrounding myself with everyone here," said the distraught teen who used to date Moormann. She also calls Stein one her best friends.
The Colerain Township community, friends and family of those involved in the accident have worked tirelessly to set up prayer services and memorials for the victims and Stein, who is still battling his injuries.
On Saturday, a makeshift memorial was placed at the site of the accident. A prayer service was held in the McAuley High School auditorium at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The accident remains under investigation.
Anyone with questions should contact Colerain Township police at 513-321-COPS (2677).
