OTR stores, eateries affected by Small Business Saturday

CINCINNATI - Before you head out to do your holiday shopping, store owners in Over-the-Rhine hope you give them a try this year.

The OTR Chamber hosted an event called Small Business Saturday to encourage shoppers to visit stores that are locally owned and operated in the historic community.
At Taste of Belgium, crowds packed the Vine Street restaurant that features authentic waffles.

"If you come and eat here or shop at one of the locally owned businesses, you'll not only support a business but all of the staff. It generates more business, it generates more taxes and helps pave the roads and keep things going," Taste of Belgium owner Jean-Francois Flechet said.

Besides restaurants, OTR also has new store vendors located at 14th and Main streets. The stores feature a variety of art, jewelry and other specialty items.

"We want people to support the local vendors. We have a lot of things that are unique here that are different from the big box stores and we want the dollars to stay here in the city," Shannan Schmitt, owner of The Spotted Magpie said.

Over-the Rhine features holiday events taking place every weekend through Christmas.
