CINCINNATI - Buddy LaRosa and city officials gathered Tuesday morning for the official "groundbreaking" of a new boxing facility at the Over-the-Rhine Recreation Center.

LaRosa was joined by Mayor Mark Mallory and Chris Bingham at 1715 Republic Street to announce the renovation of the OTR indoor pool at the facility into a place to teach youths boxing at 11 a.m.

The indoor pool sat empty for two years due to leaks and other maintenance issues, according to recreation center officials. Cost being a consideration, the city decided to fill in the pool and make a new home for the Cincinnati Golden Gloves for Youth and Cincinnati Police Athletic Club.

By the time of Tuesday's announcement, crews already filled in the pool. New paint, carpeting, a boxing ring, running track and concession stand still need to be installed a the facility.

Completion of the center is expected by late August or early September, according to the center
