CINCINNATI – Jack Donaldson, one of the original members of the Cincinnati Bengals coaching staff,  passed away Saturday at the age of 86.

“Jack was an outstanding coach,” said Bengals president Mike Brown. “He aided the development of running backs that our longtime fans remember well -- Paul Robinson, Jess Phillips, Essex Johnson, Lenvil Elliott, Boobie Clark and Archie Griffin. He was greatly respected by my father, as well as by myself, and we are saddened by this news and send our condolences to Jack’s family.”

Donaldson spent 10 seasons with the Bengals, starting as a defensive line coach in 1968 and spending his last nine seasons as an offensive backfield coach after being hired by Bengals founder, Paul Brown.

Donaldson grew up in Pataskala, Ohio and earned both undergraduate and Master’s degrees from Ohio State. During his football career Donaldson coached Ohio high schools , at the University of Toledo and with the New York Jets before being recruited by Brown.  He contributed to the Bengals playoff teams in 1970, 1973 and 1975.

A memorial service for Donaldson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Duepree House, 3939 Erie Ave in Cincinnati.
