VIDEO: Mary Milliken attacked while walking in alley in downtown Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – Police have released a video of an attempted purse-snatching that took place Wednesday in an alley that separates Sixth and Seventh streets in the Central Business District of downtown Cincinnati.

Police say Mary Milliken was walking to work at about 7:30 a.m. when two men followed her into Ruth Lyons Alley and tried to take her purse.

"I turned in the alleyway, I was right next to my office building, I was safe -- but I wasn't," she said.

According to surveillance footage, one of the two suspects grabbed Milliken’s purse and attempted to rip it away from her while the other man served as a lookout. After struggling with the victim for several seconds, the suspect pushed the 67-year-old to the ground and fled the alley with the other suspect.

Despite the violent nature of the altercation, the suspects were unable to get away with the purse. Milliken said she refused to let that happen.

"People keep saying I'm a hero, but I'm not a hero...I'm not brave. I just wasn't going to let him have my purse," she said. "It's not my favorite purse. It's just my purse."

Following the attack, Milliken went to the law firm where she works as a paralegal and contacted Cincinnati police. She told investigators she was “a little shaken up” but not physically hurt.

Even though she was affected by the altercation Milliken said she isn't going to let it change the way she feels about walking to her current office in downtown Cincinnati, something she has been doing for the past 14 years.

"I've never felt unsafe walking downtown before and I'm not going to feel that way now. I'm just going to be a little more aware," she said.

If you know anything about the attack or can identify the suspects in the video, you are asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
