Trial begins Monday for Covington man charged in fatal crash that killed local teen

CINCINNATI - A Covington man goes on trial Monday charged with causing a crash that killed a local teen.

Cincinnati police said 26-year-old Anthony Watkins knew the brakes on his car were bad but still got behind the wheel.

Watkins is charged with vehicular homicide in the death of 14-year-old Jayland Raven.

In April 2011, police say Watkins ran a stop sign at Sutter and Beekman, crashing his Ford Explorer into a car driven by Cathy Embry. The crash killed Raven, who was a passenger in Embry's car. A second passenger, Lonnie Lane, was also injured.

Police said Watkins had six outstanding traffic charges at the time and was driving on a suspended license.

Watkins' trial is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Hamilton County Courthouse. He is currently being held at the Hamilton County Jail on a bond of $500,000.
