Councilman Smitherman questions vote supporting Mahogany's

Questions raised about IRS lien

CINCINNATI - A member of Cincinnati City Council is questioning prior knowledge about a business' financial situation following a council vote to approve grants to help support that business on Wednesday.

Councilman Christopher Smitherman is questioning what was known about the financial situation of the owner of Mahogany's Restaurant prior to their vote. On Wednesday, council approved a grant and loan package totaling nearly $1 million to help the owner of Mahogany's Restaurant open at The Banks.

Liz Rogers owns the restaurant in Hamilton and has worked with city leaders for months to secure a deal to open a second location at The Banks.

Councilman Smitherman wrote the following in a statement released Thursday.

Dear Administration,

I would like to see 100% of all the financials or any paperwork for the Mahogany's transaction.  I learned last night, after the vote, that the IRS has a lien on the owners personal home.  Was the administration aware that the IRS had a lien on the owners personal home prior to the vote yesterday?
