CINCINNATI - As part of a tradition dating back to the 1960's, the Catholic Church celebrated the New Year as World Day of Peace.

Pope Benedict XVI announced this year's theme as "educating young people in justice and peace."

Sunday's mass at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains included young people from area elementary schools, high schools and parish youth groups.

The children were recognized for their involvement in service, peace and justice ministries.

"We want to take this opportunity to recognize all the young people who have already committed so much of their time for doing service for others and engaged in peace and justice activities and to also say thank you to the families and educational institutions who nurture them on that journey," said Tony Stieritz with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

Sunday's recipients were also recognized with a reception following the mass.
