18-year-old struck by vehicle in Avondale

CINCINNATI -- An 18-year-old man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning in Avondale.

Keonte Cephas was hit just before 9 a.m. at the intersection of Reading Road and Prospect Place.

"(I) saw a bunch of people standing around and I saw the young man laying on the sidewalk, so I got out of the car, went up to him," said Chic Poppe who tried to help Cephas.

"His breathing was shallow. He was bleeding out of the mouth bad, so my concern was to try to keep him conscious," Poppe said. "The police officer, when they got here, found his name. It was familiar to me because I have a grandson by the same name. So, it kind of hit home and I held onto him and rubbed his back to try to keep him awake because I thought I was going to lose him."

Cephas was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. His injuries are considered life-threatening.

"The injuries sustained are a traumatic head injury and some bodily damage. He's at University Hospital in critical condition," said Capt. Russ Neville of the Cincinnati Police Department.

Police say Cephas was not inside a crosswalk at the time of the crash.

"To our knowledge at this point, the pedestrian ran into the street into the path of oncoming traffic (and) was struck," Neville said.

The driver involved in the wreck is 16 years old. Police say the driver, whose name is not being released, is cooperating in the investigation.

"Right now, it appears to be an auto accident where the individual was traveling north on Reading Road within conditions and laws, but the investigation will make the determination," Neville said.

No other details have been released at this time.
