New manatees arrive at zoo

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Zoo And Botanical Garden is welcoming some newadditions to a major exhibit in a 'Sea Cow Shuffle.' Threenew manatees will be on display starting Thursday, Nov. 4.

The manatees, from Florida, will be in the popular Otto M.Budig Family Foundation Manatee Springs exhibit. They weighbetween 300 and 1,800 pounds.

Wooten, Betsy and Illusion replace two other manatees, Turnerand CC Baby, who are headed back into the wild next year.

This will be the first time that three manatees will live at thezoo at the same time.

The Cincinnati Zoo has been a part of the USFWS’ ManateeRescue, Rehabilitation and Release Program since 1999. It is one ofonly two facilities outside of Florida to participate in theprogram.

Manatees can live up to 60 years, but human activity, includingwatercraft collisions, threaten the species.
