CINCINNATI - It all started at WSAI radio in 1969 and progressed to TV in Dayton and Cincinnati with those stylish plaid sport jackets.
As Dennis Janson would and did say, "Somewhere there was a horse sleeping naked because I had their blankets made into sport coats."
Denny's induction into UC's Journalism Hall of Fame drew old friends and colleagues with great memories. Many from the early eighties at Channel 12.
I asked Nick Clooney, "What was the magic with you and Denny and Ira Joe?
He said, "You know, I can't even explain it now, it's something special I've never matched."
Former WKRC colleague Edie Magnus was the featured speaker. She said, "I look at him and think nothing has changed. He was exactly like he is now, unbelievably funny and amazingly piercing in his observations of people."
Many of us have shared an anchor desk and lots of history with Denny. Clyde, Steve, John Popovich and I were there to show Denny how much we respect and love him.
Longtime friend Pat Barry said, "I've known Denny a long time; I can't be more thrilled about this honor he's getting, it's well deserved. He's had so many different honors lately I asked him to go to the doctor and get checked out, to see if there's some sort of problem we don't know about."
All joking aside, nobody covers Cincinnati sports like Dennis Janson, and nobody expresses himself as eloquently.
Denny told me, "It's been one blur and to think I've been at this 40-45 years is pretty astounding. I don't know whether it's my ability or no one else was available."
And before a room full of friends and fellow journalists, the speech was vintage DJ.
"Think about you rather than I. Those two letters make the difference between being inducted and indicted."
Congratulations, Denny! All of us at 9 News are proud of you.
