University of Cincinnati Medical Sciences Building reopens after hazmat incident

CINCINNATI -- The Medical Sciences Building at the University of Cincinnati was evacuated Monday evening due to what was originally described as a chemical spill. The building has since reopened.

The incident happened at about 4:20 p.m., according to school safety officials. Students were allowed to return at about 5:30 p.m.

Fire crews were at the scene at 231 Albert Sabin Way and said a chiller compressor malfunctioned and began smoking in the basement.

The compressor was disconnected and the scene was cleared.

The Medical Sciences Building includes offices, classrooms and laboratories for almost all of the College of Medicine’s 23 clinical and basic sciences departments.
