OXFORD, Ohio – A Miami University student died after being found unconscious.

Timothy Fresch, 22, was a junior from California studying political science, according to the university.

Members of the campus community expressed sorrow.

“It’s a tragedy, and you never want to see that happen to a kid at such a young age,” freshman Ryan Siroky said.

Dean of Students Mike Curme sent out a statement on the “profoundly sad news” that read, in part: “We extend our most sincere condolences to Tim's family and friends.”

Oxford police said Fresch’s roommates found him laying in an odd position at his home on Main Street. Police believe Fresch was home alone when he became unconscious. He was taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital, and was later transferred to Bethesda North, where he died.

While the circumstances surrounding the death are still in question, police haven’t ruled out drugs or alcohol as possible factors.

Sgt. Jon Varley said he has seen an increase in drug use among students over the past year.

“It’s tragic that something like this will end that life so quickly,” Varley said.
