UNION TWP., Ohio -- Clough Pike reopened west of Ivy Pointe Boulevard just before 6 p.m. Friday after construction crews hit a high-pressure gas line while doing street repairs.
The incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. at a construction zone along a stretch of Clough Pike heading toward Anderson Township. The leak was created when construction crews working to widen Clough Pike hit a 6-inch-high pressure main, so "it's a pretty significant gas leak," according to the Union Township Fire Chief Stanley G. Deimling.
Union Township fire crews and Duke Energy workers managed to stop the leak just before 2 p.m. The crews remained on the scene for an additional four hours before the roadway was able to utilized by motorists.
At 4:15 p.m., Gina M. DiMario, media/communications manager for the township, said she hoped the road would reopen by 6 p.m. to accommodate the flow of traffic in the area.
The logistics company TQL is a business center that "has a lot of employees who will be exiting the area" at rush hour, DiMario said.
While the traffic issue was a headache, DiMario said the situation never posed a safety threat.
Deimling said the concentration of gas meant there was a possibility of an explosion but that risk was slight.
The odor of gas spread as far as Summerside Road in the Eastgate area. However, a brisk wind helped to "spread the gas out so it wasn't as concentrated," according to the fire chief.
If area residents felt concerned, they were asked to call 911, according to DiMario.
