Cincinnati HamCo Library reaches milestone: 9 things you may not know about your local book bank

CINCINNATI - In the age of e-readers and tablets, the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County boasts a growing membership. In fact, on Wednesday the library reached 500,000 card-carrying members.

Here are 9 fun facts about this milestone and benefits of joining the library:

  1. The 500,000 figure represents two-thirds of the Hamilton County population.
  2. More than 80 percent of households in Hamilton County have at least one library card.
  3. Since 2009, the number of cardholders have grown by 84 percent.
  4. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is one of only five libraries in the U.S. to receive the 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.
  5. Customers age 18 and older who only want to use the library's downloadable resources (ebooks, e-audio books and music) can get an electronic library card.
  6. Library members have access to downloadable eBooks and Audiobooks for free, 24/7.
  7. You can use the library's Zinio Digital Magazines service to read your favorite magazines on your tablet, computer, or mobile device, 24/7.
  8. Homework HelpNow connects students with tutors online for free. Learn from experts in a wide range of subjects. English and Spanish speaking tutors are available seven days a week from 2:00 to 11:00 p.m.
  9. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County has free WiFi at all of its branches.
