NEWPORT, Ky. -- Police say the investigation is just beginning in the drowning of a 5-month-old boy in Newport Wednesday morning.

Liam James McKenzie drowned in the bathtub of his home in the 400 block of West 10th Street near the intersection at Patterson Street, according to authorities.

Officers got a call reporting the drowning at about 10:30 a.m. from someone living in the home.

Investigators said they are trying to determine if the baby's mother, Amanda Lynn McKenzie, fell asleep in the bathtub with her son on her chest.

"She's telling me she had him in her arms like this in the bathtub and she let go and when she let go…who knows,” said Jamie Griffen, the boy's babysitter. “She nodded out. Who knows how long she was out and the baby went into the water."

Liam was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"She loved that baby, said Griffen. “I feel so sorry for her… I should have taken the baby with me, that's what I should have did, but I didn’t.”

Newport police say they are trying to determine if McKenzie should be charged with a crime.

They will determine that over the next several days as the investigation continues.
