WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A chemical lime spill forced some West Chester Township businesses to evacuate Wednesday evening as authorities worked to clear the scene, according to township multimedia director Barbara Wilson.

Fire crews arrived at Superior Environmental Solutions, an industrial cleaning company, shortly after 5 p.m., and discovered 60,000 pounds of spilled industrial lime creating a dust cloud in the area.

According to township officials, exposure to the cloud could have caused eye and skin irritation as well as respiratory problems for people nearby.

Authorities first issued a shelter-in-place order, then helped nearby businesses to evacuate while fire crews poured water on the spill to neutralize it.
