180-year-old West Chester building purchased, renovated by hair salon and spa

WEST CHESTER TWP., Ohio – A West Chester building has housed a tavern, general store, restaurant and real estate office since it was built in 1835. Now it enters its newest incarnation as a hair salon, the Journal-News reports.

Karen and Mark Welch moved their business, SoZo Hair by Bajon Salon & Spa, into 9069 Cincinnati-Dayton Rd. in an attempt to gain space. After purchasing the building in September, the couple renovated the building and expanded their services to include spray-tanning on the list of hair, skin, nail and massage options.

The Welches are considering adding quiet exercise to one room upstairs, as well as a space on the first floor that will be dedicated to male customers, called the “Captain’s Quarters.”

“This is where a man can go if he wants to discreetly get his hair colored,” Mark told the Journal-News. “An only-your-hair-dresser-knows-the-difference kind of thing.”

The Welches told the Journal-News they were excited to own the building and expand the salon into the 5,000-square-feet available.

“It’s definitely exciting to be able to rehab something and keep it local,” Karen Welch told the Journal-News.

The West Chester Union Township Historical Society is happy that the historical building is being reused, president Mary Jo Bicknell told the Journal-News.

“It’s one of the oldest buildings in the township and to see somebody go in there with a business that seems like it’s thriving and plans on staying in that corridor instead of just maybe selling it off or (turning it into) a development of some type, the historical society is very pleased with that,” Bicknell said.
