LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio – An 11-year-old boy is credited with saving the life of a 9-year-old girl who almost drowned Tuesday in Liberty Township.
Mitchell Leitzel said he had his goggles on and was treading water when he saw a little girl sink to the bottom of the Lakota Family YMCA pool at about 3:30 p.m.
"I saw the girl at the bottom of the pool,” Leitzel said. “Her eyes were rolled back so you could see the whites of her eyes."
The moment Leitzel realized something was wrong, he told his mother.
"She dove down and pulled the girl up, brought her to the side,” he said. “A paramedic was there, not on duty, she was just there with her kids and the lifeguards helped her.”
Leitzel said the paramedic and his mother performed CPR on the girl.
“My mom did the chest compressions and the paramedic did the breathing,” he said. “She finally barfed and the paramedic found a pulse and she was breathing."
Leitzel said the little girl was able to speak and asked for her mother.
Medics took the girl to Cincinnati Children's Hospital's Liberty Township campus.
