REILY TWP., Ohio -- A local family suffered two tragedies within five hours after a 10-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle and hours later flames ripped through the same family's home.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said Adam Liken was riding his bicycle at about 8:25 p.m. Wednesday on Sample Road in Reily Township when he was struck by a vehicle.
Jones said the woman who hit Adam is from Evansville, Ind. She tried to swerve out of the way, but was unable to dodge Adam and his bike.
Liken's mother, Cora, told WCPO reporter Brian Yocono her son suffered skull fractures.
He is recovering at Children's Hospital, listed in critical condition, Cora said.
Approximately five hours after the bike accident, at about 1:30 a.m. Friday, fire crews were called to the Liken's home in the 1500 block of Sample Road in Reily Township after flames heavily damaged the residence.
The fire destroyed the home as the roof caved in, windows were broken and flames turned the Liken's belongings into ashes.
The family was not home at the time of the blaze because they were at Children's Hospital with Adam, according to Jones.
Adam is a student at Marshall Elementary School, where faculty set up a donation program to help the Likens get back on their feet.
