LIBERTY TWP., Ohio – Cincinnati’s child cancer patients could soon have another treatment option after two major hospital expansion projects totaling more than $160 million in Butler County are complete.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center announced its plans Tuesday to begin construction on a $118 million new facility that will house a proton therapy and research center for cancer treatment in Liberty Township.

The new facility is expected to house two proton treatment rooms for clinical use and will take three years to complete.

Jim Feuer, a spokesperson for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, said the innovative radiation treatment can dramatically reduce the risk of late complications experienced by survivors of pediatric and young adult cancers and generates fewer side effects.

“A major advantage of proton therapy over traditional forms of radiation treatment is its ability to deliver focused radiation to a tumor area with remarkable precision. This approach avoids radiation exposure to the surrounding healthy tissue,” he said.

The Liberty campus treatment center will be one of just about a dozen proton therapy treatment centers in the country. The National Proton Therapy Association estimates there are at least 15 more in development.

The hospital also announced its plans to begin construction on a $44 million project to add 28 new pediatric inpatient beds to its Liberty campus.

The project, slated to begin late 2014, will be accomplished by adding a fourth floor to the existing three-story structure.

Feuer said the beds will add new patient capacity for general and specialized care, and they will also serve patients receiving proton therapy and other types of cancer care.

The bed expansion project is expected to be complete by summer 2015.
