ABERDEEN, Ohio – A former police chief will serve 60 days in jail and spend two years on probation for domestic violence charges that were brought after his wife hanged herself.

The day before Laura Gast hanged herself in 2013, Clark Gast held her by the throat, slammed her against a wall and told her “I ought to kill you,” according to court records. Her death was ruled a suicide.

Clark Gast was formerly the police chief of Aberdeen.

He also beat his wife in bed and choked the family dog once it began biting him during the attack, the court records state.

Gast was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 120 suspended. The sentence also included two years of probation, a $1,000 fine, 80 hours of community service and the requirement for Gast to complete anger management classes.
