GEORGETOWN, Ohio -- Detectives investigating the case of a slain pregnant mother in Brown County last month say they have new leads in the events that led to her death.
Twenty-two-year-old mother Brittany Stykes, of Ripley, was found shot to death in her Jeep off U.S. Route 68 on August 28. Her 14-month-old daughter Aubree was also found shot in the vehicle, but was later treated and released.
Investigators working to solve this case say they have several leads, including the description of a vehicle that may have been involved in the shooting.
Surveillance cameras at a McDonald’s at 4883 Ohio 125 recorded Stykes at about 7:30 p.m. -- minutes before she was found dead, authorities said. Her body was discovered less than 5 miles away.
Detective Buddy Moore of the Brown County Sheriff's Office said investigators have not been able to identify a motive for Stykes’ death – and almost a month later, the sheriff's office is no closer to making an arrest.
"The traffic detail we did last week did result in some tips,” Moore said. “We were able to talk to three or four different people who saw the same type of vehicle around the time of the murder."
Earlier this month, Stykes' husband Shane told a local radio station he doesn’t think her death was random. Moore said detectives just don't know.
"We have no reason to believe this was a targeted incident or if it's random,” Moore said. “Right now, we're still looking into everything."
Brittany Stykes was shot two times and died in her vehicle. A bullet entered Aubree's head, hit her brain, and exited her skull. She was treated and released – and her father this month said she’s doing “amazing.”
“You wouldn't believe it if you'd seen it," Shane Stykes said. "I can't tell you if she's 100 percent, because something may come up down the road. She's still young and developing. But she acts now like she was before she was shot."
Investigators said several people have come forward with information in this case, but they're still looking for more help. If you think you have a tip, the Brown County Sheriff's Office asks that you call 937-378-4435.
