Bright Ideas: Of humans, zombies and updates to Cincinnati crowdfunding projects

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati area is rich in creativity and bright ideas. Many artists, community activists and entrepreneurs are ready to run with projects and programs, and they’re turning to crowdfunding sites to fuel their ideas.

Each week, we’ll highlight two projects that are underway and asking for your support.

Project: The “Only Human” Project

Platform: Kickstarter.com
Started: January 15, 2014
Goal: $4,000
Project By: Garrett Ley

The “Only Human” Project is a manga/anime styled product that includes collaborative artbook. The idea for the project came from a shared childhood dream of Ley and his friend Kevin Florkiewicz, to occupy artist alley at an anime convention.

With the cost of making this dream come true fairly high, the pair put The “Only Human” Project into effect. Ley and Florkiewicz decided to call up some fellow artists from deviantART.com , a worldwide community they are both affiliated with, and ask them to collaborate on a manga/anime style artbook based around the concept of exploring humanity.

Where will the money go? Ley is trying to raise funds to finish the animated book and finally make the dream of debuting it at an anime convention's artist alley a reality.

Ley hopes the project will bring a new perspective to art lovers everywhere and allow them to finally see Cincinnati as a diverse and culturally rich city.

Why should people support The “Only Human” Project?

Garrett Ley says: “You should support our project if you want to see more art around Cincinnati. If you’ve always wanted it to have that cool art scene, now is your chance to GIVE it that art scene. Even if you’re not from Cincinnati, we are offering our own work along with a beautiful artbook from some of the most successful illustrators out there right now. What’s not to love?”

Project: Zombies!!! 13: DEFCON Z

Platform: Kickstarter.com
Started: January 15, 2014
Goal: $5,000
Project By: Twilight Creations, Inc./Kerry Breitenstein

Zombies!!! 13: DEFCON Z is a follow up to Twilight’s prior Zombie board games. For this version, the story line consists of the military, the CDC, and others mobilizing against the zombie threat, and recruiting people with experience cutting through zombie legions.

The completed set will include:

  • 30 map tiles
  • 50 Event cards
  • 100 zombie figures
  • 6 survivor figures
  • Rules

Where will the money go? Funding will allow Twilight Creations, Inc. to include cool, new features to allow gamers to get involved with the story and even design Zombies.

Breitenstein believes the campaign will have a great impact on the industry, allowing loyal fans to become even more involved in the game and possibly drawing the attention of past fans that haven’t played the games in some time.

Why should people support Zombies!!! 13: DEFCON Z?

Kerry Breitenstein says: “People want to back the project, because they have been fans for so long and they want the ability to have their impact on the game. They will have their faces on cards, their mechanics in the game and their name in the rules. It will make the game more personal to them. Some people have also been having trouble getting the expansions to the game, and this allows them an easy and guaranteed way to get the expansion. It also allows them to get the promo cards which can only be obtained through kickstarter.”

Who got funded?

As promised, we’ve circled back with a few of our previously featured projects to see if they had success in receiving funding, and what they’re up to now.

“The MS Manifesto: Thriving In Denial” - Nancy Thomas

Unfortunately, The MS Manifesto did not reach its funding goal. That being said, Thomas has not given up on her dream of writing her story and sharing it with the world. Thomas is currently working on pitches to send to publishers.

“Rare Elements” -  Miya Sohoza

Sohoza is excited to report that Rare Elements not only reached its goal, it surpassed the goal by $19,508 for a total of $44,508! She said the project continues to move forward, and she hopes to launch a second set via Kickstarter.com in early April.

Sohoza added that Rare Elements will be displaying at the gaming convention Cincycon  in March.

“Cold Sliver of Moon” - Rob Lewis

With only seven days left before his project closes, Lewis came in at $600.00 over goal. Since then, he has been talking with editors and is on his way to having the book in stores by April. He said those interested in following the progress of the book can get updates and sneak peeks on the "Cold Sliver of Moon" Facebook page.

Lewis also has plans to use remaining funds from his project to have a second book that he has written edited and made available online. For now, he is keeping the synopsis of that book under wraps until “Cold Sliver of Moon” hits shelves, but said the book will be available to buyers by the end of summer.
