NORFOLK, Va. - Friday the 13th is considered to be an "unlucky" date, and one common superstition is that there are more accidents when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday.
So an emergency room doctor in Norfolk, Va., studied six Virginia hospitals over a seven-year period to see if it's true.
The study was done by looking back at all emergency room visits on Friday the 13th from Nov. 13, 2002, to Dec. 13, 2009.
After looking at 49,000 cases of the unluckiest conditions like car accidents, penetration wounds and general admissions, the doctor concluded that there's no rise in E.R. visits on this day compared to any other Friday.
There is one exception to that conclusion. Of 13 different conditions evaluated, penetrating traumas were seen more often on Friday the 13th.
