Cincinnati State students rock the Sputum Bowl

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Cincinnati State Community & Technical College's respiratory therapy team won second place honors in a national quiz competition nicknamed the Sputum Bowl in Anaheim, Calif., under the proud gaze of the man known as the "father of mechanical ventilation."

The Cincy team earned the trip to the national competition after winning the Ohio state championship.

Seventeen states were represented by community and four-year universities at the competition, which tests students' knowledge about the field of respiratory therapy.

An audience of about 1,000 people at the American Association for Respiratory Care’s International Respiratory Convention & Exhibition watched, including Dr. Forrest M. Bird -- an American inventor known in the industry as the "Father of Mechanical Ventilation."
