HAMILTON, Ohio – The trial of a 72-year-old Hamilton woman charged with murder began Tuesday.
Delores “DeeDee” Jackson, of Grant Circle, was arrested after she stabbed Diana Ross, 56, of Cincinnati on June 14. She was charged with murder and tampering with evidence for allegedly taking the knife from the scene.
In court on Tuesday, the prosecution presented video tape of the police interrogation of Jackson.
"She was hittong on me and punching me. I just went in my fanny pack," said Jackson. "I went in and got my knife and I came up off the ground and I came up like that, officer. To get her off of me."
Detective Jim Calhoun said that there were no signs of struggle or defensive or offensive wounds found on Jackson.
Jury selection began Monday in Judge Keith Spaeth’s Butler County Common Pleas Court at 9 a.m. The trial is expected to last three days, according to the Hamilton Journal News. Court will continue into Wednesday.
Defense attorney David Brewer will argue his client was acting in self-defense.
“This is not a who-done-it case,” Brewer said. “It just is whether there is justification.”
Ross and Jackson knew each other for many years, according to earlier reports of the stabbing death. They both often argued with each other, according to family who spoke with the Hamilton newspaper.
Hamilton police and fire units received a call of the stabbing around 11:08 p.m. June 14 near Jackon’s home on 505 Monument Street. Ross was found unresponsive and suffering from a puncture wound. She was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Jackson is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
