Amanda McKenzie: Mom charged in baby's drowning sentenced to 5 years behind bars

NEWPORT, Ky. -- A mother charged in the drowning of her 5-month-old son was sentenced Tuesday to five years behind bars under a plea deal.

Amanda McKenzie, 30, is charged with reckless homicide after her son Liam James McKenzie died in August 2013. McKenzie told police she accidently fell asleep in the bathtub with Liam on her chest.

"She's telling me she had him in her arms like this in the bathtub and she let go and when she let go…who knows,” said Jamie Griffen, the boy's babysitter. “She nodded out. Who knows how long she was out and the baby went into the water."

Liam was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
