CINCINNATI - The tech world is getting a nod from wordsmiths.

Hashtag has won the 2012 word of the year by the American Dialect Society.

Hashtag is a social media tool used commonly on Twitter to categorize a post. The "# " symbol is used as a way to discover trending topics as well.

After becoming popular on Twitter, Facebook users have incorporated the hashtag into their postings, too.

People are also using it in everyday language, which helped secure the nomination.
