5-year-old was killed by scythe

HILLSBORO, Ohio - An 18-year-old charged with killing his 5-year-old niece with a scythe in Highland County is still in jail and faces future hearings after he appeared in court Thursday morning.

Matthew Pierson faces murder charges for the death of his 5-year-old niece Jada Beth Williams, that he allegedly killed with a scythe, or hand instrument used in the cutting of high grass or weeds. During his Thursday hearing, the detective in the case took the stand and talked about Pierson's confession to killing Williams inside the house on Flat Run Road on Saturday, Aug. 11 and where officials found the scythe.

Highland County officials said they found Williams dead in the garage of a residence located on Flat Run Road in Jackson Township on Aug. 12.

During the initial search of the home after the body was found, detectives recovered what they believe to be the murder weapon, a scythe. Williams died of multiple blunt force trauma to her head, face and neck according to preliminary autopsy findings.

Pierson was bound over to a grand jury following his hearing, which means the case will continue as there is probably cause. Pierson is still being held at Highland County Jail on $500,000 bond.
