Renewing your tags in the next few months? Renewing your drivers license...or want a new one because you moved?

Then you need to know about some new late fees and other changes at Ohio BMV offices....that are catching many drivers offguard.

New Fees

The BMV has raised prices on several services, including motorcycle and commercial renewals.  See the BMV website (Click link) for details.

New Late Fees

Angie Oder emailed me to say she found out the hard way about the new "20 dollar late fee if not done within 7 days of your birthday."

Yes, as of October 1st, 2009, you'll have to pay another $20 if you are more than 7 days late renewing your plates or license.  And if you have multiple cars, those late fees can add up to $100 very quickly.

Proof of Address Now Needed

Dave Metzger emailed me about another change, saying he discovered you can no longer just tell the BMV that you moved when renewing or replacing your Drivers License.

Dave says "you must provide proof of your new address with a piece of mail, and they are picky about what you can use."

You need to show a utility bill or similar "official" document at your new address to have the address changed on your license.  So if you just moved two weeks ago, you may want to wait another month of so before you renew.
