CINCINNATI - Meijer is set to hire thousands of workers in the near future.

The company announced Thursday that it will hire about 9,000 new employees in a variety of positions ahead of the fall and holiday shopping seasons.

That figure includes 1,600 jobs throughout Ohio, 1,800 jobs in Indiana and 500 jobs in Kentucky.

Company officials said the move is in response to recent growth. The grocery-store chain said it has already opened five new stores and six more are planned to open this year.

Meijer said nine stores will open throughout the Midwest in 2014.

“Our continued growth, along with the upcoming holiday selling season, make it imperative that we increase our staffing to properly operate our stores and deliver on the Meijer promise of providing exceptional customer service,” said Janet Emerson, executive vice president of operations, in a release.

Anyone interested in applying can do so at: Candidates can also apply in-store at most Meijer locations.

The company said most of its locations require a staff of 200 to 250 employees.
