SHARONVILLE, Ohio -- Kellogg's is laying off 248 Greater Cincinnati employees this summer as it closes a suburban distribution center.

The cereal and snack giant announced in February it would be closing the Sharonville facility, along with its other 38 distribution centers around the country.

At the time, Kellogg's wouldn't disclose how many local workers would be affected, saying only that its distribution centers employed about 30 full-time workers on average.

The 248 layoffs are more than eight times that amount. The company notified state officials Friday.

The employees' last day will be sometime between late July and mid-August. Some work at the distribution center on Mosteller Road, while others, such as employees who stock grocery store shelves, work outside the center.

Kellogg's is doing away with its direct store delivery model and transitioning to its warehouse model, a move truck driver Gary Daugherty described as a money-saving effort.

"It's easier to ship it straight to the customer instead of having us do the job," he said.
