CINCINNATI - As gas prices soar to almost $4 a gallon, it might have you thinking about getting a car with better gas mileage.
Elio Motors is working to deliver just that — an affordable car that gets 84 miles per gallon.
"We'll give you power windows and door lock, AM/FM stereo, we'll give you A/C and heat standard, and the Elio's safety system, which is three airbags, a full roll cage, anti-lock brakes and seat belts front and back," said Chip Stempeck, vice president of marketing for Elio Motors.
Though it has similar features as other brand-new vehicles, this car has quite a different look: it only has three wheels.
Due to the design, the small, sporty whip has room for a driver and passenger who have to sit tandem in the vehicle. The company says that's the key to better gas mileage.
"So what we've done by going two deep instead of across, so tandem seating one in front of the other, we actually reduce that drag and that's why your mileage goes up," said Stempeck.
The cost for each vehicle is $6,800, but it won't be available to consumers for at least another year. Stempeck says production is slated to begin next year in Louisiana.
"I can't build the motor until I have the plant to build the motor so we have to make a couple jumps I guess you could say," he said.
The vehicle will be on display from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday outside of the the Reds Hall of Fame at Great American Ball Park.
