Habitat for Humanity's Restore offers discounts on appliances and furniture.
In this tough economy, many people can't afford a new stove or washing machine if theirs goes out. So then you may want to check out a non-profit store just off the Norwood Lateral in Cincinnati that sells used appliances at big discounts. And best of all, you get to help out a great cause.
Money Tight? No Problem
Need to upgrade the house, but money's a little tight? Then consider a visit to Habitat for Humanity's "ReStore.""It's a retail outlet that sells new and used building supplies, appliances, furniture, lighting, doors and more," said Marissa Woodley of Habitat. Woodley gave me a tour of the ReStore, a giant appliance and hardware store, where everything is half price or less. She showed me what she called "a perfectly good cabinet in good condition, and it's just $7."
Most Appliances $75 - $200
The ReStore sells used, working ranges and refrigerators, washing machines, even wall ovens, for less than $200. All are tested to make sure they fully work. Best of all, all appliances come with a 30-day warranty.
"We don't want to be known as a junk store. Its important for us to deliver a good quality product to the public," Woodley said. You'll find bathroom sinks for $30 and matching granite counters -- yes, real granite-- for just $45.
Furniture, Sprayed for Bugs
And in case you were worried about bedbugs, all soft furniture has red tags stating it has been sprayed, just to be safe. Is there a little bit of a piano man in you? The day I was there, they were selling a working piano -- off tune, but functional -- for just $50. Customer Millie Brown says the ReStore has saved her more than $1,000."We actually bought my mom a rangetop and a hood. And now we're getting a bathroom for an apartment," she said.
ReStore Asks for Donations
Meantime, the ReStore welcomes donations, which are tax deductible.
"We would love to take your old cabinets out of your house for you and resell them here for a family that can't afford to go too a big box store," Woodley said. Best of all, proceeds go toward building Habitat for Humanity houses, so you save money and help a good cause. That way you don't waste your money.
