CINCINNATI -- With the cutting of a ribbon, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) introduced new flights from two discount airlines Wednesday -- a huge improvement from just two years ago.
Allegiant Air flights are now available between CVG and Orlando-Sanford Fla.
Flights will begin from CVG to Punta Gorda, (Ft. Myers and Marco Island, Fla). this Friday.
It will fly three times a week from Cincinnati to the Orlando area, and once a week from Cincinnati to the Naples area.
Allegiant Air joins Frontier Airlines in offering low-fare flights at CVG.
Frontier, which has offered discount service to Denver since last year, is expanding its Cincinnati service to New Jersey, now offering low-cost nonstop flights to Trenton-Mercer Airport in Ewing, N.J.
"We are tickled to death because (my husband’s) sister lives 11 miles from the airport, and we are not wasting our money. We can go more often," said Sondra Lewis, who boarded CVG’s inaugural Allegiant Air flight to Florida Wednesday.
Bob and Sondra Lewis were able to get their seats for $200 round-trip – almost half the price of major airlines.
But is Allegiant a home run for Tri-State travelers?
For the most part, they are.
But there are some downsides: Allegiant Air’s flights are more like a vacation charter, with just two flights available each week to Orlando, and only a single flight a week to Naples.
Another potential downside: If your flight is canceled, CVG officials can’t simply move you to the next flight -- because there won’t be a next flight for two days.
But Allegiant Air officials say they will make travelers get to their destination.
"In the event of bad weather, we have plenty of spares,” said Allegiant spokesperson Eric Foatcher. Yes, we don’t have eight flights a day into Orlando, but we do have plenty of spare planes to make sure we accommodate passengers quickly."
There is no doubt many local travelers won’t mind taking that risk: WCPO found round-trip flights to Orlando in June for $182, while Delta is asking $350 for the same route most days.
As always, don't waste your money.
