First UCC formed as a congregation in 1855 as the First German Evangelical Protestant Congregation of Cumminsville. For more than 100 years the church flourished in Northside and was a prominent fixture in the lives of thousands of Cincinnati families. The church remained relevant in the area throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s--even as other churches closed or saw their participation decrease.
In 1993, a storm lifted the church steeple and dropped it onto the main sanctuary. The destruction led to the congregation’s move to College Hill and a new sanctuary on Glenview Avenue. Since moving to College Hill in 1995, First UCC has become the site for many community and church events such as the College Hill Gardener’s Tour, musical festivals, community dinners, interfaith gatherings, a parish health ministry, Boy Scout gatherings, the CSO’s Nouveau Chamber Players and the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Pastor Dan says:
“First Church reflects some of the best traits of the UCC denomination in our welcome, our hospitality and our prophetic witness. It is a congregation that does not pretend to be something more than what it is.
It is not a church of “holier-than-thous.” It is a congregation that does its best to live out the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. The beautiful grounds on which the church is located instill a pastoral and peaceful effect for all who come."
