CINCINNATI - The Tri-State is rich in the number and variety of houses of worship. In our weekly feature, WCPO shines the spotlight on where we pray.
Church of the Advent
- Address: 2366 Kemper Lane, Walnut Hills
- Denomination: Episcopal
- Top Clergy: Rev. KyungJa Oh, Rector
- Size of Congregation: 70 members
- Affiliation: The Episcopal Church, Diocese of Southern Ohio
Core Beliefs: "The Advent community is a weekly gathering of faithful followers of Christ. It values our racial and socio-economic diversity, and the Episcopal tradition encourages worshippers to welcome and respect the varying ecumenical backgrounds and expressions from which all have come. Advent is committed to outreach to the local neighborhood of Walnut Hills and its residents. While the congregation is small in number, its impact on the lives of the most vulnerable members of the residential community is significant."
The Church of the Advent was organized on July 12, 1855 and consecrated as a parish by the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio in 1873. The emergence of the renewal movement in the 1960s had a profound effect upon the parish. During this time, the parish was active in the Episcopal charismatic movement.
Another notable development in the history of the Church of the Advent was the founding of the Open Door Ministry in 1973. This ministry was established to assist the mentally disabled in the community. It has grown to serve the wider community and includes a protected payee program.

- Welcome Center: Monday – Friday 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
- Community Food Pantry: Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

- Food Share (grocery give-away): Last Saturday of the month or as posted

The Advent also serves as the local base for two parish nurses through the Good Samaritan Hospital and Bethesda Foundations, and Tri-Health Parish Nurse Ministry.
"Advent is our church"
Barbara and Jim Haven has been part of this church community since 1958.
“It’s our church; the place where we should be,” said Barbara Haven, 81. She likes the music and made a commitment to sing in the choir, which she has done since she joined the congregation. Haven also appreciates the community outreach done by Open Door.
“I enjoy the people I am with,” she said, adding that she has made lifelong friends at Advent.
A "casual" congregation
“While our worship service follows the order and reverence of the Book of Common Prayer, we are casual in dress and informal in our relationships with each other. In this diverse neighborhood, we continue to welcome all," said Rev. KyungJa Oh, rector of Advent since December 2011.
The rector is proud to point to Advent's presence in Walnut Hills for nearly 160 years, through thick and thin.
"Our parish community was born during the prosperous years, remained here to serve our neighbors in greatest need during the long period of great urban decline and continues its commitment to the residential community today as redevelopment efforts restore the quality of life in this historic neighborhood," Oh said." Through it all, Advent has remained dedicated to the neighborhood and its people as an expression of true Christian discipleship."
