CINCINNATI -- Love your pet? You're in the right place.

A study from Wallethub found Cincinnati was the eighth most pet-friendly city in the United States.

Number-crunching wizards looked at 19 key metrics -- things like a city's walkability, the cost of veterinary care, dog insurance premiums and pet-friendly restaurants per capita.

Cincinnati ranks first for number of pet businesses, second for number of vets and 10th for number of animal shelters per capita.

Here's the complete breakdown (with 1 being best and 50 being average):

  • 42nd – veterinary care costs
  • 34th – dog insurance premium
  • 2nd – number of veterinarians per capita
  • 1st – number of pet businesses per capita
  • 19th – number of pet-friendly restaurants per capita
  • 28th – number of dog parks per capita
  • 30th – Walk Score
  • 10th – number of animal shelters per capita
  • 25th – number of pet caretakers per capita

Cities in the Sunbelt filled out the top of the list, with Orlando at No. 1, Birmingham at No. 3 and Tampa at No. 3. Our neighbor to the south, Lexington, came in at No. 4.
