Time for Monday Morning Musings, which, this time of year, taste vaguely pepperminty.
-I am still giddy with excitement that UC named Tommy Tuberville the new head coach of the Bearcats. So excited I can't really formulate my reason why into a coherent paragraph, so I'm just going to list them – in no particular order.
-It was quick - just more than 24 hours from the announcement that Butch Jones was leaving (which you heard first here on GMTS Friday) to the official word that Tuberville would take his place. This means the powers-that-be had a plan in place and acted on it.
-This is a departure from the recent hires. Don't get me wrong – those recent hires have worked out well – but to go for a guy with a name is a big move.
-I love Tuberville. I covered him when I was in Memphis and he was at Ole Miss. Oxford, Miss., is about 45 minutes south of Memphis, and we would get down there to cover the Rebels only every so often. (Think about how the Cincinnati stations cover Miami.) Yet every time we were there, Coach Tuberville would welcome us to practice or to a news conference, answering our questions without asking us why we weren't there last week. You'd be surprised how often that happens in other coaching regimes. The players respected him, and he's had success just about everywhere he's been. Then he went to Auburn, which was my favorite football team growing up. He coached them to an undefeated record in 2004.
-He's got a Southern drawl. Even yelling and screaming sound better when you have a Southern drawl. At least that's what I tell my kids.
-It has people talking. Hiring a coordinator or someone from a smaller school might translate into wins, or additional tickets sold, but hiring a guy with a name is a bold move. I need to get some UC gear.
-We were driving around this weekend when Dolly Parton's "Hard Candy Christmas" came on. We explained what that meant to our kids, when my younger daughter said, "I don't like hard candy. You know what I do like? Hash browns."
From Today's Show:
-Green Monday: OK - I get Black Friday and Cyber Monday … this one just sounds made up. But you can get some deals, so I guess it's okay. They're calling today "Green Monday" because it's supposedly the busiest shipping AND shopping day of the year. FedEx says it will ship 19 million packages today – that's 200 per second. Wow. But if you're a procrastinator, you want to circle Dec. 17 on your calendar. That's the last day to ship to get it where you want it on time for Christmas.
-Bengals Back at Work: No time to dwell on Sunday's loss – the Bengals are back on the practice field today to prepare for Philadelphia Thursday night. But those drops against Dallas are going to haunt them.
