Wine me, dine me pick: ¡Por favor! Special Cuban pizza at Dewey's needs to stay on the menu

NEWPORT, Ky. - We are pleased to bring you this weekly feature from Julie Niesen Gosdin, the voice behind the food blog wine me, dine me. Julie serves up a "Pick of the Week," when she visits a local eatery and samples a signature menu item.

Cuban pizza at Dewey’s

Dewey's monthly specials on pizza are always interesting. The Tito Santana is a cult classic, and I still wish that they'd bring back the J. Wellington Wimpy, which is a hamburger pizza (of course) with ketchup and mustard "sauce" topped with ground beef, tomatoes, cheese and pickles.

On Sunday, my husband and I were looking for something for lunch that was a little different than our usual, so I checked Dewey's monthly pizza special and saw a Cuban pizza. My beloved pickles on a pizza? We had to go.

We first headed to the Clifton location (no lunch on Sunday!) and then to the Newport location, where we split a salad and a Cuban pizza.

Right now, you only have a little over a week to try it.

Dewey's, of course, is a small, Midwest chain that's been a favorite in Cincinnati for years (despite its ownership by a former St. Louis Cardinals player). There are locations around the Tri-State, as well as Indianapolis, Cleveland, Dayton, Columbus and St. Louis.

There are some stellar pizzas on the menu (the Green Lantern and the Southwestern BBQ are favorites) as well as some really fun, interesting salads. Your kids (or you) can watch them make pizzas in their windowed kitchen.

The Cuban pizza is Dewey's take on a Cuban sandwich: Delicious Dewey's crust, mustard, Swiss cheese, pork shoulder, ham, pickle slices and a Cuban-style mojo sauce. My husband was a little wary, but once he tried it, he agreed: We have to come back before the end of the month to get another. It's just that good.

And what is mojo sauce? Mojo, or mojo criollo, is a citrus-based condiment that also includes oregano and garlic. It's a great marinade for chicken or pork, and while not traditional on a Cuban, we liked the added flavorful punch.

Why is this a wine me, dine me bite of the week? Dewey's pizza never fails to impress, and this one, which combines a favorite sandwich with a local favorite pizza needs to stay on the menu for just a little while longer.
