Wine me, dine me pick: In the crowded sea of sushi places, Blue Koi finds a fresh way to stand out

Sushi at Blue Koi

There is so much sushi in Cincinnati. From high end, artistic places like Jo An and KaZe, to create-your-own sushi at Fusian to some pretty good grocery store sushi at Kroger. Do I love a piece of beautiful nigiri with the freshest possible tuna on it? Of course. Do I also love creative rolls? Yes, indeed.

Blue Koi, opening on Friday in Crestview Hills Town Center , focuses on create-your-own sushi and wraps, headed up by Josh Iles, formerly of Mixx Ultra Lounge.

I got to try some of the sushi for lunch when their marketing person, who is a friend, brought some by. I wasn't prepared to be impressed – sushi is pretty mainstream these days – but I was!

I tried two rolls: One with smoked salmon, the Blue Koi crab mix (that includes just enough spicy mayo to moisten the crab a bit as well as some togarashi and sesame seed) and avocado. I also tried a more complicated roll: shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese and spicy mayo inside with avocado, eel sauce, more spicy mayo, tempura crunch and sesame on the outside. Both were great, but the simplicity and the slight smokiness of the salmon roll won me over.

If you're not a sushi fan, Blue Koi carries wraps: chicken Caesar, steak and summer chicken. The also have a liquor license for sake, craft beer and wine.

Why this is a wine me, dine me pick of the week: Fresh ingredients, great location, and a crab mix that's a little different. Delicious!
