CINCINNATI - The puppeteer who created and voiced "Elmo" for almost 30 years, Kevin Clash, resigned Tuesday over underage sex allegations. So many young children love Elmo. They also overhear and pickup on things, and that could challenge parents to answer tough questions.
Heidi Malott, a social worker and clinical manager at Cincinnati Children's Hospital says it's important that children know Elmo is a character, not a person.
"Make the distinction that this was an issue in this person's personal life where he may have not made good decisions."
Malott also says parents can use this as an opportunity to talk to children about what to do if they're in an uncomfortable situation, and what they can do to stay safe.
