CINCINNATI - The annual battle for the Firemen's Bell was decided quickly on Friday night as the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds scored on the game's very first play and never looked back as they downed the Newport Wildcats, 49-0.
NewCath (4-4, 3-0) got a big performance from senior running back Dylan Hayes, who scored three times and finished with 123 yards on 12 carries in limited action. The scoring started when senior quarterback Josh Cain connected with Dan Ruwe on a 64-yard touchdown pass and NCC never looked back. Cain finished the night by completing 7-of-10 passes for 141 yards and the TD. Seniors Mason Meyers (28, 11) and Pete Collopy (8) rounded out the scoring with a trio of TD runs.
Playing with just 16 players, Newport (2-6, 0-3) was overmatched from the outset. The game went to running clock before the half as the ‘Breds took a 49-0 lead and no points were put on the board by either team following intermission.
NewCath looks for the sweep inside district play as they face off against Holy Cross on Thursday night at Scott High School while Newport travels to Lloyd.
