Flying can be a practical travel solution if you have children. You can trade hours of over-the-road miles for a relatively quick flight with a convenient restroom and sometimes even an in-flight meal.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the Federal Department of Transportation, developed a set of guidelines for protecting your child during car travel.

Most airlines welcome children five years of age and older as passengers without an adult traveling companion. This is usually allowed even on international flights.
