Oil light

Last Update: 3/28/2003 1:53 pm
Your car is equipped with several warning lights on the dashboard. One of these warning lights is for oil pressure. This warns you if the oil stops being pumped to the moving parts inside your engine. If this light comes on and stays on, pull over right away. Your car's oil circulation system lubricates moving parts, dissipates heat and carries dirt and particles away. If the oil system fails, it can seriously damage your engine in a very short period of time. Check the dipstick and if the oil level is low, add as much as needed. If the level is good or if the light doesn't go out after you add oil, stop the engine and have it checked by a professional mechanic. Until the problem has been corrected, do not drive the vehicle. The oil pressure light should not be used as an oil level indicator. Use the dipstick to check the oil level frequently.
