Pi Patel (Sharma) tells a fantastical tale of traveling on a freighter with his parents and the family's zoo animals when he was 16. A storm takes out the ship and Pi is left in a lifeboat alone with some of the animals.

Eventually, Pi and a tiger named Richard Parker are left. They live on separate rafts before learning to trust and fend for each other.

After 227 days at sea, the lifeboat reaches the coast of Mexico. Parker stops at the edge of the jungle. Pi expects that the tiger will turn toward him and acknowledge him, but he looks into the jungle for a while and goes in.

Pi is rescued, and at the hospital, insurance agents for the freighter come to hear his account. They don't believe the story, so he makes up another, parallel tale about being on the lifeboat with a wounded cook and his mother.

At the end, the tale's author asks the audience to pick the story they prefer. A copy of the insurance report shows the agents chose Pi's original, fantastical tale.
