James Goldston named ABC News' new chief

NEW YORK (AP) -- James Goldston, who was ABC News President Ben Sherwood's top deputy, has been appointed to succeed him as head of the television news organization.

Sherwood is heading to California, recently promoted to co-president of the Disney/ABC Television Group.

Goldston was a television executive in Britain when he joined ABC News in 2004. He was the chief producer of "Nightline" in the post-Ted Koppel era and in 2011 took charge at "Good Morning America" and helped that show move past "Today" to the top of the ratings. In 2012, he was promoted to senior vice president for content and development across the news division.
